Frequently Asked Questions
Q:     Where does the information originate?
A:     Data is obtained from the Department’s evolving Condition Acquisition and Reporting System (CARS). Mn/DOT and State Patrol staff from dispatch centers, the field and the Traffic Management Center use this system to maintain real-time information about travel conditions throughout the state. The system continues to evolve as one comprehensive and timely source of data that ultimately improves the information available through services like 511.
Q:     How often is the information updated?
A:     Information is updated by Mn/DOT and State Patrol staff on an ongoing basis as incidents arise and situations change using the CARS.
Q:     Can I get information about a specific road?
A:     Yes. You may access weather-related road conditions, congestion levels, traffic incidents and construction information for specific roads.
Q:     Haven’t I seen this information before?
A:     Yes, Mn/DOT has provided traveler information to other sources, such as the media, for many years. In addition, some of the data has been available via the Mn/DOT web site and through some wireless phone companies. However, the service has been enhanced and is now available directly to travelers and commuters at all times. Enhancements include abbreviated 511 dialing, voice recognition, increased capacity and easier-to-navigate web pages.
Q:     What happened to my local Mn/DOT travel information phone number?
A:     In some areas, Mn/DOT provided local telephone numbers for travel information to offset peak demands, for example, during bad weather; that information is now all available with increased capacity online and by phone at 511.
